How much can the integration of thewind energy in the power grid? Maybe a million euros? No, much more!
That's 13,300,000 euros (yes yes, you read that right, thirteen million and three hundred thousand euros!) Grants awarded to a European competition to efficiently integrate thewind energy in the grill.
The consortium we are talking about is theeStorage, is made up of various companies in the sector, such as:
Alstom, leader in the production of energy transmission systems
Elia, a company expert in the development of networks on a human and environmental scale
EDF, present in Italy through the Edison group
DNV Kema, an engineering consulting firm
Algoe, in charge of management consultancy
The mission of eStorage is to develop more effective solutions for the reliable dissemination ofclean energy throughout Europe. The various objectives see solutions of accumulation of clean energy, improvement of the management systems of the grid (electricity network) with the ultimate aim of obtaining the perfect integration ofrenewable energy in the electricity networks of all Member States.
The key step to achieve these goals lies in the completion of an operation of fundamental importance. The modernization and transformation of thehydroelectric plant fixed speed pumping station (PSP). The plant is located in Le Cheylas, is owned by EDF and will be transformed from fixed speed to variable speed. Once the modernization is completed, the Le Cheylas plant will provide 70 MW of additional night-time regulation capacity, this will allow integration with the production of several hundred MW of clean energy.
A portion of the European PSP capacity can be added at variable speed and provide up to 10 GW of additional regulation capacity without any impact on the environment and at a far lower cost than the investments planned for setting up a new plant.
We have already mentioned the storage systems: PSPs represent the most flexible and widespread system for storing huge quantities of electricity. When the winds blow slowly and the energy demand weighs on the grid, transferring water between two tanks located at different heights, the PSP stations provide for the electrical distribution. In addition, a crucial role played by PSPs is to maintain a constant balance between production and consumption, which is essential for establishing stability in the electricity grid.
Why is it necessary that thehydroelectric plant of the fixed speed pumping station becomes variable speed?
All PSPs currently in Europe are basically fixed speed units and this is a big drawback to the eletricity grid of the Union. Fixed speed PSP systems are able to provide only energy regulation in production mode, while variable speed units can regulateelectric energy in production modeand pump, guaranteeing excellent results even for 24 hours a day.
