Also known as the Coral Bell, theHeuchera it is a splendid garden plant that we can decide to host and cultivate to fill space with its splendid colorful flowers, small but that many know how to change the fate of a green space in the summer. There are so many variety of Heucera but there are few things to remember if you want to successfully cultivate this type of plant that we find commonly also called "alum root". The scientific name that we are using instead reminds us of a well-known botanist friend of Linnaeus, such Johann Heinrich Heucher to whom this vegetable is dedicated.

Heuchera: characteristics

Perfect for creating imaginative and creative borders, theHeuchera it is a plant that not only knows how to adapt to every corner of every garden but also knows how to make them particular and lively. It is no coincidence that among the most popular plants those belonging to this genus, also suitable for rock gardens which are often not easy to decorate in a dignified way.

The genus Heuchera is part of the family of Saxifragaceae and all its different species are united by the size, always reduced, always under 35/40 cm in height. Even the leaves are different from time to time, always particular and similar to those of the Geranium, some with elegant streaks and various colors, from yellow to purple to reddish, but with the jagged edge that makes everything more picturesque. These two features make the Heuchera perfect for borders both in gardens and in public flower beds, for example in road roundabouts. If in the middle seasons we have to be satisfied with the leaves, at the end of spring and in summer the flowers also appear, very delicate and supported by thin stems.

Heuchera: variety

This genus of plants includes about 50 species and many varieties, cultivars and hybrids very easy to find on the market and also to grow, as we will see shortly. The origin of this plant is American, grows in the hilly and mountainous areas of North America, but also lives very well in other parts of the world, including Italy.

If you decide to use it in your garden, you find yourself choosing from a large number of varieties, cultivars and hybrids, and it is impossible not to find the one that's right for us. Here we will talk only about two varieties that have particularly task for us, the Americana and the Hirsutissima.

The first species, from North America, has semi-palmate green, purple or brown leaves with more or less showy veins and flowers, in summer, they sport a color light green or cream, small and not too particular, they can not steal the place on stage from the leaves.

The Hirsutissima is also called "Shaggy-haired alum root”And just look at it to understand that the nickname fits perfectly. Its inflorescences are bristly and hairy, the flowers are small and light pink, and make hers very disheveled look.

Heuchera: flowering

Even if it is show of the leaves enough and move forward, it is better to understand when to expect the flowering of the Heuchera which takes place from spring to summer, when the thin stems develop that must make room between the leaves. The flowers are small and tubular and they can be red, green, purple, brown and with shades of yellow or lilac.

How to grow Heuchera

It is a rustic plant that does not require who knows what care, just do the essentials to get splendid results both in pots and in the ground.

In pot to embellish balconies and terraces it grows well if kept away from the sun especially in the summer months even if in containers that are not too large, just a diameter between 22 and 28 cm. We take a mix of high quality soil and peat in equal parts after having prepared a layer of coarse sand, expanded clay or lapilli in the bottom of the pot, to increase the draining capacity. When there is no more room for the roots, we must proceed with repotting

In the open ground we can cultivate it in a more extensive and free way, remembering to dedicate it a ample space because it is a plant that gives a show and it would be a shame to sacrifice it in a corner. We also avoid placing it where tall trees sprout that would give it shade because it likes areas of full sun or partial shade. Again we must be very careful that the soil is perfectly draining, as well as with pH from neutral to slightly acid and rich in organic matter. If you are making a border, the recommended distance between two plants is about 30 cm.

Heuchera: how much and when to water it

Watering the Heuchera is not particularly demanding, just check that the soil, especially on the surface, has not become too dry. Only when it is, we must provide water, otherwise it is better to avoid because i water stagnations are very dangerous for our plant.

It is important to pay attention to the temperatures, especially those that are too high which end up damaging our plant which likes exposure in full sun only in mountainous areas where temperatures do not rise too much.

Heuchera: diseases and parasites

Another danger for this rustic plant is constituted by a series of diseases and parasites which are the common ones. The roots can be attacked by weevils while if the substrate is too wet, rust can form. Attacks by aphids cannot also be ruled out but if we follow all the indications there is no risk. And if our Heuchera gets sick we can intervene with specifics antifungal and pesticide products.

Heuchera: price and where to buy it

If the beauty of the leaves has intrigued us and the ease of cultivation has amazed us, we can immediately bring some Heuchera seeds through Amazon where there are also available for less than 15 euros in packs of 20 pieces.
